Flies of our Waters

Wondering what fly to use on our waters, well below you will find a small selection of fly patterns that consistently deliver the goods when it comes to catching fish. As you will notice if you have fished the region "Chew Valley Resevoir", "Blagdon" and the "Barrow Tanks" that these are the "usual suspects" used throughout the season.

Patterns that fish well

    Quill buzzer
  • Black Buzzer - We all know the "black buzzer", here is a version called the "quill buzzer", which is a personal favourite of mine. Best fished very slowly with a figure of eight or just cast out and let drift around slowly with slight breeze. Best fished spring/early autumn.

    Blood Worm
  • Gold Head Blood Worm - Bloodworms are found in or near the muddy bottom , however they eventually emerger and swim up through the water layers. This pattern is for tempting the trout in the upper layers of water. Allow to sink very slowly as takes are very often taken on the drop. Retrieve slowly with twitching action sufficient to activate tail.

    Fry Pattern
  • Fry Pattern - In every water small fish are usually in abundance and as this pattern immitates small fry it is a must for every fly box. Fished with slow pulls and the occasional erratic twitch will produce a savage take.
